14DEC2019 – DAY 1: THE JOURNEY BEGINS

Early in the morning, I hopped on the plane at BOS headed to LAX to begin the journey that I had no clue would change my life forever. After 6 hours, I exited the plane and realized this is was the furthest I had ever been from home by myself. Taking my self-sufficiency to heart, I felt like I was indeed ready to take on whatever this trip decided to throw my way. At this point, it was just a matter of hours until I would board the next plane taking me to AKL.

Once inside the LAX airport, I made my way to the international terminal to wait. After walking through the entire airport, I ended up more or less where I was supposed to be. However, my uncertainty got the better of me this time and I didn’t want any surprises so with some quick thinking, I remembered seeing a help desk for my airline back in the domestic terminal just past the gate where I had landed coming in from BOS. I headed back across the airport and after talking to the woman at the desk, I proceeded to trudge my way back to the international terminal to the area I had already been before to wait for my gate to be listed.

In a storefront just past the food court, I happened to notice something I am not sure I will ever count myself lucky enough to see again, but it did improve my mood after just having walked across the airport 3 times. In the storefront stood a group of 4 people, 3 of which were dressed as pilgrims while the fourth was none other than Santa Claus, himself. What made this sight even better was that the pilgrims were caroling with Hanukkah songs, singing ‘Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah’ as I walked past and tried to sneak a picture without being noticed. I made my way to the gate that was now listed to await my flight to AKL.
